President Barack Obama has ordered a delay in administration review of
deportation policies until the end of the summer. The hope is that the
House of Representatives will approve a larger immigration overhaul before
then, since this may be the last opportunity for such action this year.
Administration officials say that, by delaying the review, Obama sought
to remove any excuse for inaction in Congress. House Republicans are now
in the place to decide whether or not the legislation will be brought
to the House floor before Congress breaks for its annual recess at the
end of the summer.
There has been much pressure on the White House from activists, urging
the President to change deportation policy immediately. However, the President
also received support from pro-immigration groups who urged him to wait
until the legislative window has passed.
The National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference, National Immigration
Forum, Service Employees International Union, Sojourners, the Leadership
Conference on Civil and Human Rights, and the United States Conference
of Catholic Bishops Committee on Migration issued the following statement:
"We strongly urge President Obama and his administration to allow
for this process to take place before issuing administrative action. We
believe the president should move cautiously and give the House leadership
all of the space they may need to bring legislation to the floor for a
